Cyprus Can Deter Attack on British Bases, Says Government Source

Cyprus has the capability to prevent a new attack on the British Bases, thanks to the military support provided by Italy, Greece and France, with contributions from Spain and the Netherlands, a government source said. The immediate and strong response of EU member states following the recent drone strike on Akrotiri Base is also a “legacy of Cyprus” to the Union, according to the same source. The response of member states gave substance for the first time to Article 42 (7) of the Treaty on the European Union, which provides for the obligation to provide assistance to a member state under armed attack. The activation of this article was done without requiring a formal activation, highlighting the solidarity of the member states. The government source stressed that the response of member states sends multiple messages and enhances the security of Cyprus and the British Bases. Cyprus particularly appreciates the support it received from its partners in the EU.
