Cyprus: Electricity Authority Faces Increasing Solar Power Curtailments

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is facing an increasing phenomenon of curtailments in solar power production, as generation does not match demand and there is no energy storage capacity. Curtailments are made on the orders of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator, starting with a reduction in production, then curtailments in large installations, and if necessary, disconnection of smaller installations. The phenomenon is expected to continue in March and April, with a possible decrease in summer due to increased demand. The EAC does not provide advance notice of curtailments, but announces them on its website after implementation. In addition, the EAC is proceeding with the installation of an energy storage system at the Dhekelia Power Station. Finally, it was reported that some consumers are interfering with the receivers of their photovoltaic systems, causing problems for other users, with the EAC warning of taking measures, including disconnection.
