Cyprus Faces Up to 30% Honey Production Decrease Due to Weather Conditions

Honey production in Cyprus is facing a significant decrease of up to 30% due to unfavorable weather conditions. Senior Agricultural Officer Lysandros Lysandridis points out that pressure on bee populations is a global problem with significant implications for plant pollination and agricultural production. The main causes of the decrease in Cyprus are climate change, habitat loss due to urbanization and fires, and the indiscriminate use of pesticides. Although bee losses in Cyprus are not as high as in other countries such as Bulgaria and the United States, the weather conditions significantly affect production. High temperatures and drought reduce wild vegetation, limiting bees' access to pollen and nectar. In addition, changes are observed in the biological cycle of bees, weakening their immune system. The government has taken support measures for beekeepers, such as the Beekeeping Program and subsidies for the cost of moving hives. However, the biggest problem remains unfair competition from imported honey, especially from China, where prices are much lower than Cypriot honey. Mr. Lysandridis emphasizes that Cypriot beekeepers have not made significant price increases despite rising production costs, which jeopardizes the sustainability of the profession. Maintaining bees is crucial for Cyprus, given the effects of climate change on agricultural production and biodiversity.
