Cyprus Foreign Ministry Expresses 'Disappointment' over UN's 'Equal Distances' Approach

The Cyprus Foreign Ministry expressed its satisfaction with the reaffirmed commitment of the UN Secretary-General to continue efforts to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue, aiming for a sustainable and comprehensive solution. It also welcomed the holding of substantive discussions on fundamental aspects of the problem, for the first time in five years. However, it expressed its disappointment with the UN's long-standing tendency to maintain 'equal distances,' which it believes leads to a fragmented and inaccurate picture of the situation on the ground, undermining the effort to create a climate of trust. The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that Turkey bears sole responsibility for the situation in Varosha and calls for its full compliance with relevant Security Council resolutions. Furthermore, it expresses its concern over violations of the ceasefire line by the occupying army, especially in the Deryneia area. At the same time, it underlines the importance of the role of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in ensuring smooth living conditions and protecting property rights in the buffer zone. The Foreign Ministry expects the implementation of the agreed-upon measures and the organization of a new expanded meeting under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, with the aim of resuming talks from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana.
