Cyprus Government Faces Storm Over Leaked Video Alleging Cash Funding

A video circulating on the X platform has sparked a political storm in Cyprus. The video allegedly depicts a government official, a former minister, businessmen, and individuals presented as investors discussing cash funding. The government vehemently denies any implications, characterizing the video as malicious and manipulated, utilizing editing and potential artificial intelligence to create false impressions. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the Cypriot Intelligence Service (KYP) is investigating the video's origin and motives. The KYP has already submitted initial findings to the Attorney General and the Chief of Police. Questions under investigation include who created the video, their capacity, and their responsibility under defamation or false news laws. Letymbiotis mentioned the examination of a possible hybrid operation against the government but dismissed the possibility of a leak from the Presidential Palace. He addressed reports of Russian involvement, stating that the government has not made such claims and that the matter is under investigation. The former Minister, Lakis Lakkotripis, has given a statement to the Police regarding the video, while the government maintains that there is no evidence regarding the identity of the "investors" shown in the footage. The case is ongoing and is expected to generate further reactions and discussions in Cyprus.
