Cyprus Justice Ministry Arrests Undocumented Migrants in Crackdown on Crime

The Cyprus Ministry of Justice is conducting a nationwide operation to arrest undocumented migrants, having already made over 30 arrests. According to the Minister of Justice, Kostas Phytiris, the purpose of the operation is to address public concerns about safety and to combat organized crime. Mr. Phytiris emphasized that the Government is committed to fighting crime, regardless of the perpetrators' origin. The operation comes during a period of increased crime in Cyprus, with incidents such as violent assaults and shootings outside the Larnaca Police Headquarters. The Ministry of Justice recognizes the need for a rapid response to the situation and is implementing expedited deportation procedures for illegal migrants involved in criminal activities. Mr. Phytiris highlighted the importance of public cooperation in combating crime, calling on citizens to provide information to the Police, even anonymously. In addition, it is expected that the House of Representatives will support the passage of legislation that will strengthen the Police's tools to combat organized crime. However, the operation has been criticized by some as an attempt to appease public opinion without addressing the root causes of crime. Some argue that the Government should focus on strengthening the Police and promoting social policies that will reduce crime.
