Cyprus Not a Target of Attacks, Foreign Minister Says

The Cypriot Foreign Minister, Konstantinos Kombos, stated in an interview with Sky News that the Republic of Cyprus is not a target of attacks related to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, but that incidents have concerned British military bases on the island. The situation in the region remains difficult due to Cyprus's geographical location, however recent incidents at British bases were handled without casualties or serious damage. Mr. Kombos welcomed the deployment of military assets from the United Kingdom, including the HMS Dragon destroyer and Wildcat helicopters capable of downing drones. Cyprus is also cooperating with Greece, France and Spain to strengthen its security. The Minister emphasized Cyprus's humanitarian role, pointing out that it has never been involved in military operations in the region. Cyprus facilitates the evacuation of citizens and provides logistical support to citizens of many countries, having repatriated approximately 500 Cypriot and European citizens within 24 hours. Mr. Kombos estimated that there is no immediate de-escalation of the conflict in the Middle East, with tensions intensifying. He stressed the need for continued diplomatic efforts and reiterated that Cyprus does not participate in military operations, but is affected by developments in areas such as energy security, navigation and the global economy.
