Cyprus on Alert After Swiss Nightclub Tragedy

Published January 3, 2026, 19:18

The tragedy in Cran Montana, Switzerland, where people lost their lives in a nightclub fire, has raised alarm bells in Cyprus. Fire Chief Nikos Logginos warns of establishments that do not comply with fire safety regulations, while the General Secretary of the Association of Entertainment Center Owners, Fanos Leventis, acknowledges the need for stricter adherence to safety measures. The problem lies with both illegally operating businesses and legal establishments that do not adequately implement regulations. A lack of oversight from local authorities and relevant departments of the Ministry of Interior allows dangerous situations to persist unchecked. Specific mention is made of the use of pyrotechnics (show drinks) in nightclubs, which create an impressive atmosphere but pose serious risks. Sparks from pyrotechnics can reach heights of over 40 centimeters and ignite flammable materials. These items are sold freely on the market. Despite Cyprus not having experienced a similar tragedy to date, the situation is considered dangerous, and luck has played a significant role in avoiding casualties. The need for stricter inspections, enforcement of fire safety regulations, and raising awareness among business owners and the public is crucial.
