Cyprus Requests Military Aid from France, Greek F-16s Arrive

The Republic of Cyprus has requested military assistance from France, similar to that received from Greece, stated Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis. Simultaneously, it was announced that the Minister of Foreign Affairs had new communication with the UK Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who assured that the Bases in Cyprus are not included in discussions with the US. Mr. Letymbiotis called on the public to remain calm and the media to continue their responsible stance, verifying information. He stressed that there is regional concern due to the overall crisis, but all necessary measures are being taken and there is full operational readiness. Greece has already sent two frigates (Kimon and one with the Centaur unmanned aerial vehicle countermeasure system) and a pair of F-16 aircraft to Cyprus, as part of the strengthening of preventive measures. The President of the Republic had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Greece and the President of France on the same issue. Furthermore, it was reported that information was received about two unmanned aerial vehicles heading towards the British Bases in Akrotiri, which were dealt with promptly. The Government is in constant coordination with other EU and regional countries.
