Dead dolphin found in Paphos: Species rarely seen in Eastern Mediterranean

A dead dolphin was found on a beach in Paphos, mobilizing the competent authorities. The dolphin belongs to the species Steno bredanensis (Narrow-beaked common dolphin), a species rarely seen in the Eastern Mediterranean, making the incident of particular scientific interest. Samples were taken for DNA analysis and other measurements, and the animal was collected by the Municipality of Paphos for cremation. The authorities were initially informed about the stranding on Thursday, but the animal was not found. They were then informed again on Friday about the discovery of the dead dolphin. During the on-site examination, no external injuries were found, but abrasions were observed, possibly caused by rubbing against rocks. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) reports that the narrow-beaked common dolphin prefers open, deep seas and rarely approaches the coasts, explaining the low frequency of records in the area. Every observation or stranding is important for improving knowledge of the species' distribution and protecting marine mammals.
