Decisions on Tychikos and a New Model for Electing Bishops

Published January 8, 2026, 06:24

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus is convening urgently to make decisions regarding the issue of the former Metropolitan of Tychikos and a proposal to change the way Metropolitans and Bishops are elected. The issue of Tychikos is considered closed, as his appeal to a political court and the rejection of his confession of faith allow the Church to proceed with canonical procedures. The proposal for the election of Metropolitans and Bishops provides for direct election by the Holy Synod, without the involvement of the popular vote at the stage of the triple nomination, except for the election of the Archbishop. The purpose of the change is to avoid divisions and select worthy bishops.
