Disagreement over DISY's Guarantor Proposal and KEDIPES' Role

Published February 9, 2026, 17:32

DISY's proposal regarding guarantors is causing reactions, with AKEL labeling it as “red” and Averof Neofytou responding that it is not an election move. The Chairman of KEDIPES, Lambros Papadopoulos, stated that KEDIPES has returned €1.75 billion to the state from the €3.54 billion it received in 2018 and continues to return €200-300 million annually. He emphasized that interventions in foreclosures are not in the interest of the taxpayer. Regarding “red loans,” he stated that the problem began in 2008 and that banks addressed it by selling the loans to third parties, while KEDIPES manages the “bad part.” He rejected criticism of a lack of effort to resolve the problem and defended the foreclosure framework as an incentive for borrowers.
