DISY Party in Turmoil Following Assault Allegations Against MP

Published January 5, 2026, 11:33

Allegations of assault against DISY MP Nikos Sykas have triggered emergency meetings and the activation of procedures within the party. DISY President Annita Dimitriou has proposed the immediate removal of Mr. Sykas from the ballot and called on him to waive his parliamentary immunity. Mr. Sykas has vehemently denied the allegations and reserved his legal rights. The DISY Executive Bureau has approved the President's proposal, while the Political Bureau will meet on Wednesday to finalize it. Should Mr. Sykas resign from the ballot, his position will be taken by either former MP Andreas Michaelides or Timis Efthymiou. If he resigns from Parliament, the position will be filled by the President of KOAP, Andreas Kyprianou, followed by the Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Glyki Chatzimanoli. Currently, the issue of Mr. Sykas's expulsion is not being considered, unless he is convicted.
