Doctors "Blocked" by Software Issues in Cyprus' Health System

A pan-Cypriot survey by the Cyprus Medical Association (CMA) reveals serious and systematic problems in the operation of the Information System of the General Health System (GHS). Nine out of ten doctors report experiencing disruptions or unavailability of the system. The survey, conducted from September 30 to November 30, 2025, with the participation of 728 doctors of all specialties, shows that the malfunctions are not isolated incidents, but a recurring phenomenon that affects daily medical practice and patient care. Disruptions can last up to four hours and occur weekly or even daily. In addition to disruptions, 62% of doctors report slow system performance, while 54% state that the delay significantly affects their work. Furthermore, 82% frequently encounter technical problems, such as disconnections and errors. The most problematic functions concern the search for medical history, the prescription of drugs, the issuance of referrals, and the loading of examinations. Technical malfunctions cause delays in appointments, patient accumulation, and inability to provide service, while eight out of ten doctors are forced to postpone tasks, increasing their working hours. In addition, medical protocols are characterized as difficult to understand and time-consuming by 86% of participants. Despite the difficulties, 46% of doctors rate the system's usability positively, and 61% recognize that it contributes to the quality of health services provided.
