Ecuador to Share Drug Information with European Center

Ecuadorian authorities announced they will begin exchanging information with the European center MAOC-N, specializing in combating drug trafficking. This cooperation aims to strengthen operations against trafficking, particularly in the Gulf of Guayaquil, and reduce illegal flows to the European Union and other destinations. Based in Lisbon, MAOC-N provides information, analysis, surveillance, and operational support to countries involved in the fight against drugs. Ecuador has become a significant hub for drug trafficking in recent years, mainly cocaine from Colombia and Peru. Approximately 227 tons of drugs were seized in 2025. President Daniel Noboa has declared a "war" on gangs and is implementing a strict policy to tackle organized crime. The country has experienced an unprecedented wave of violence, with the homicide rate reaching 52 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2025. The situation has led to criticism of the security and effectiveness of the authorities. The exchange of information with MAOC-N is expected to contribute to strengthening Ecuador's ability to confront the growing threat of drug trafficking and organized crime.
