Eerie Silence and Smell of Burning in Caracas After US Strikes

Published January 3, 2026, 20:11

Following US strikes, Caracas has fallen into an eerie silence, with the smell of burning lingering in the air. The Venezuelan capital is almost deserted, with shops closed and streets empty, while few citizens form queues at supermarkets to buy food. Armed agents patrol the city center and around the presidential palace, where Nicolás Maduro recently condemned imperialism. Approximately 500 supporters of Maduro gathered in front of the presidential palace, demanding the return of him and his wife, who were arrested and transferred to the United States to be tried for "narco-terrorism". The military airport is blocked, with planes obstructing the runway.
