El Mencho Buried in Gold Casket Amidst Heavy Security in Mexico

The leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” was buried on Monday in a suburb of Guadalajara, Mexico, under tight security and secrecy. The burial took place in a golden casket accompanied by massive floral wreaths, with a significant military presence in the area. The burial location was confirmed by a federal official, but authorities declined to provide further details for security reasons. Dozens of people attended the procession, many carrying black umbrellas despite the sunny weather, while a musical band played traditional Mexican music. The funeral home had received large wreaths since Sunday, some bearing rooster images, a symbol associated with Oseguera Cervantes, who was also known as the “Lord of the Roosters.” El Mencho was killed just over a week ago in an operation by the Mexican military. According to the death certificate, he succumbed to wounds from bullets to the chest, abdomen, and legs. This description aligns with information provided by Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla, who said Oseguera Cervantes and two bodyguards died en route to the hospital after a shootout. The death of El Mencho sparked a wave of violence in roughly 20 Mexican states, with more than 70 people losing their lives in additional violent incidents. Authorities continue their operations to arrest other high-ranking members of the cartel, while funerals of drug lords in Mexico are often shrouded in mystery, which their supporters exploit to reinforce the mythology surrounding them.
