Equal Distances and the Forgotten Pursuit

The government of the Republic of Cyprus has expressed satisfaction with the latest UN Security Council resolution, however observers point out that the focus is limited to positive references, overlooking the negatives and dangerous ambiguities. The resolution, while recognizing the Republic of Cyprus and condemning the Turkish occupation, does not adequately address issues such as the occupation, colonization, and the alteration of the demographic character of Cyprus. Criticism is directed towards the lack of equal distances in the UN Secretary-General's reports and resolutions, as there is insufficient reference to the Turkish occupation and its consequences. The reference to Varosha and Strovolia is considered positive, however the case of Pyla is not mentioned by name, possibly due to fear after the violent incidents of 2023. It is emphasized that the status quo is unsustainable and that the promotion of fait accompli by the occupying side makes it difficult to resolve the Cyprus issue. Furthermore, the omission of reference to colonization and land expropriation is criticized, while it is suggested that the Cypriot government remind the representatives of the Secretary-General that the so-called “presidential” building is built on stolen land. Overall, the article highlights the need for a more decisive stance by the Republic of Cyprus and the international community to address the problems substantially and create prospects for a solution to the Cyprus problem, beyond generalities and superficial satisfactions.
