Erdogan to Bloomberg: Turkey's Return to F-35 Program Crucial for NATO Security

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking Turkey's reinstatement into the US-led F-35 fighter jet program, arguing that it would strengthen relations with Washington and enhance NATO security. This move appears to be part of a broader effort to improve ties with the US, leveraging Erdogan's good relationship with Donald Trump. Turkey was previously excluded from the program due to its purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems, a decision Erdogan deems unfair. Erdogan stated that he has already discussed the matter with Trump and expresses hope that his return to power will create a more constructive basis for relations between the two countries. He emphasizes that Turkey has already paid for the F-35 aircraft and its re-entry into the program is essential for strengthening defense cooperation. Concurrently, Turkey is considering returning the S-400 systems to Russia, in an attempt to appease US concerns. Erdogan has already raised the issue with Vladimir Putin, demonstrating a willingness to find a solution that would restore defense relations with the US. Ankara is also seeking to purchase F-16 Block 70 aircraft from the US, with the cost being a subject of negotiation. A phone call between Trump and Erdogan is expected today to discuss issues such as Gaza, Ukraine, bilateral relations, and the situation in Venezuela with Nicolas Maduro. This conversation is expected to further clarify the intentions and expectations of both sides.
