Erhiyurman: 'We Will Not Ignore That We Are Being Ignored' Regarding von der Leyen's Speech

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhiyurman, criticized the speech of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the inauguration ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, as it made no mention of Turkish Cypriots. Erhiyurman characterized this omission as an act of disregard and stated that he would not overlook it. In his post, Erhiyurman also commented that von der Leyen's speech focused on the history of Byzantium, overlooking the complexity of Cyprus's history. He expressed the view that the EU should recognize the presence and needs of Turkish Cypriots in order to build trust. Erhiyurman emphasized that he will continue to raise this issue at every opportunity, in meetings with European officials, and will seek to explain the position of Turkish Cypriots. He believes that a review of the speech by the EU side would be enlightening. Concluding, Erhiyurman underlined the determination of the Turkish Cypriot people to assert their rights and not be ignored by the EU.
