EU: Proxy Voting for Euro MPs on Maternity Leave

EU member states have approved an amendment to the European electoral law allowing proxy voting for Euro MPs during pregnancy and maternity leave. This amendment enables Euro MPs in advanced stages of pregnancy or who have recently given birth to temporarily delegate their vote to a colleague, for up to three months before childbirth and up to six months after. The Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, welcomed the agreement, emphasizing that it strengthens democratic participation and gender equality. The regulation facilitates the balance between parliamentary duties and motherhood, supporting the participation of women in European politics. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, described the decision as an important step forward, welcoming the amendment to the electoral law. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the rules of procedure of the European Parliament, making it more family-friendly. Currently, Euro MPs on maternity leave do not have the possibility of remote voting, unless they travel in person to Strasbourg. Some member states are considering extending the measure to fathers or Euro MPs on long-term sick leave. Following approval by the EU Council, the text will be forwarded to the European Parliament for final adoption.
