Stavros Malas Appointed Head of Committee for Livestock Sector Restructuring

Stavros Malas has been appointed Head of the Special Scientific Committee for the restructuring and upgrading of the livestock sector in Cyprus. He expressed his gratitude to the President of the Republic for his trust, emphasizing that the appointment concerns his scientific capacity and his mission as President of the Cyprus Institute. Mr. Malas highlighted the critical state of the Cypriot livestock industry, describing it as the largest and continuously worsening crisis in its modern history. He stressed the vital importance of the sector for the economy, rural development, food security, and social cohesion. In his post, Mr. Malas called on all stakeholders – livestock farmers, scientists, the state, agricultural organizations, and society – to join forces to address the crisis. He expressed the need for reliable data, scientifically sound approaches, and practical, sustainable solutions. Mr. Malas dismissed the involvement of political rivalries, stating that his priority is to contribute to the recovery of Cypriot livestock farming through specific and implementable proposals that will support the sector and develop it into a modern and resilient model for the next decade. The success of the effort is considered the responsibility of all.
