‘False Positive’ Alarm Last Night in Akrotiri - Mayor’s Appeal to Citizens

Late on Wednesday evening, authorities in Akrotiri were put on alert following an indication of a possible threat. However, as clarified by the Mayor of Kourio, Pantelis Georgiou, the British Base informed that it was a “false positive”, that is, a false indication from the surveillance systems. The alarm ended quickly, without the need to activate the sirens. The mayor stated that he was in communication with the Bases and was informed about the initial indication. The Bases did not provide more details about the object detected, beyond the assurance that it was not a threat. Simultaneously with the alarm, messages were sent to residents of the area through the Municipality's communication channels. The Municipality of Kourio operates an early warning system, in which approximately 4,500 residents are registered, while the total population of the area reaches 40,000. The mayor appealed to citizens to register in the system, so that they can be informed immediately in case of need. He himself received the Civil Defense message around 7:30 PM.
