Farmers Protest EU-Mercosur Deal Across Ireland and Europe

Thousands of farmers in Ireland, Poland, France, and Belgium protested over the weekend against the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which received provisional approval from a majority of EU member states. Farmers express fears that the deal will lead to an influx of cheaper agricultural products from South America, undermining the competitiveness and sustainability of European farms. The Irish government, under pressure from the opposition and farming groups, questions the guarantees for food safety standards in South America. Both Ireland and France have pledged to fight for the rejection of the agreement in the European Parliament, where its approval will be needed for it to come into effect. The protests were accompanied by slogans and placards condemning the deal and warning of its negative consequences.
