Flamingo Population in Cyprus Declines by Up to 31% Since 2013

A worrying decline is observed in the number of flamingos wintering in Cyprus, with a decrease of 14-31% since 2013. The Akrotiri Salt Lake, an important wetland for the species, is being degraded due to developments and activities incompatible with flamingo protection. According to Nikos Kasinis of the Game and Fauna Service, Cyprus was presented as a negative example at the 4th International Flamingo Symposium in Venice. Potential factors for the decline include frequent droughts, poor water quality, and lack of food. Legal proceedings have been initiated and actions are being promoted through the LIFE IP PHYSIS project to improve the living conditions of flamingos.
