Flu A Surge in Cyprus After Holidays

Following the New Year celebrations, there has been an increase in hospital admissions for Flu A in public hospitals in Cyprus, according to Charalambos Charilaou, spokesperson for the Cyprus Organisation of State Health Services (OKYPY). This increase is considered expected for the season (January-April) and does not cause concern, as OKYPY states it is fully prepared to handle the increased demand in Accident and Emergency Departments and hospitalizations. Furthermore, the increased attendance at the Emergency Departments is not due to cases of overeating, but to the absence of personal doctors due to leave during the holidays. This resulted in a greater burden on the Emergency Departments for cases that would normally be handled by personal doctors. Despite the increased pressure, Mr. Charilaou stressed that the fast-track patient clinics were operating normally, efficiently serving non-emergency cases. All cases were handled adequately, ensuring care for patients. In summary, the increase in Flu A cases and the increased attendance at Emergency Departments during the holidays is a recurring phenomenon that is effectively managed by OKYPY, without creating alarming situations.
