Flu and RSV in Cyprus: Situation Under Control, but Protective Measures Remain Essential

Cyprus is experiencing an expected increase in seasonal infections, including the flu, RSV, and COVID-19, without causing concern, according to statements by the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health, Elisavet Konstantinou, and the Spokesperson of the Cyprus Public Health Service (CPHS), Charalambos Charilaou. Both emphasized the importance of not becoming complacent and adhering to individual protective measures. The coverage rate for the flu vaccine reaches 55%, considered a “quite satisfactory” percentage, although the vaccine does not cover 100% of the circulating strains. The increase in cases is attributed to increased social contact, but does not justify complacency. The Ministry of Health recommends frequent handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based solutions, good ventilation of spaces, and cleaning surfaces with disinfectants. Specifically, it is recommended to avoid visiting crowded places, especially by vulnerable groups, and to wear a mask if experiencing symptoms. The Ministry of Health urges those who have not been vaccinated against the flu to contact their personal doctor, while for COVID-19, it refers people to the vaccination centers. Charalambos Charilaou stated that a further increase in cases is expected in the coming period, however hospital admissions remain at the same levels as last year. The EU has deployed an Election Observation Mission of Experts, which will monitor the post-election processes.
