Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Obstacles in Sampling, Veterinary Services Report – First Meeting with Stavros Malas

Veterinary Services are facing resistance from livestock farmers in their efforts to monitor foot-and-mouth disease, particularly in the Geri area. Farmers are refusing sample collection, citing the possibility of false positive results due to vaccination and challenging animal culling decisions. The Veterinary Services reject these claims, emphasizing that the tests detect only natural infection. So far, over 17,000 animals have been culled in three main areas (Livadia, Dromolaxia, Geri). The vaccination program is progressing at different rates, with an 85% vaccination rate in cattle and 49.3% in sheep and goats. After the completion of vaccination, the Veterinary Services will conduct a nationwide surveillance to assess the viral load. Epidemiological investigations are mandatory in infected areas to protect the rest of the livestock population. In an effort to coordinate, a meeting was held with the participation of Stavros Malas, focusing on scientific guidance and improving timelines. Emphasis was placed on better organization to address the virus and predict potential spread scenarios.
