Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak in Cyprus: Situation Report

The situation regarding foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus remains stable but concerning, with approximately 1300 goats and sheep already culled and another 2700 expected to be culled by tomorrow in the Aradippou and Livadia areas. The Veterinary Services confirm that no new cases have been reported beyond the 22 units in the Larnaca province and continue epidemiological investigations and laboratory tests, which have so far yielded negative results. Vaccinations by private veterinarians are also progressing, with an additional 26,000 doses procured. The assessment of the economic damage caused by the disease is underway, including the value of animals, hay, feed, milk, and destruction costs. Compensation will be provided to farmers based on these assessments. Authorities are taking biosecurity, cleaning, and protection measures at infected farms, while teams are assessing the condition of animals and their products. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease are ongoing, and any evidence found will be submitted to the Police. If criminal responsibility is established, appropriate legal procedures will be followed. The Veterinary Services emphasize that their laboratory is accredited, regularly inspected, and collaborates with the national reference laboratory, ensuring the reliability of the results. The spokesperson for the Veterinary Services, Sotiria Georgiou, assured that in the event of a finding of unreliable results, the European Commission would be immediately informed and the laboratory's operating license would be suspended. Emphasis is placed on adhering to protocols and ensuring animal and public health.
