Foot-and-Mouth Disease Spreads in Cyprus: Cases Confirmed in Dali and Geri

The spread of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus has reached dramatic proportions, with the virus expanding beyond the initial control zone and being detected in livestock farms in Dali and Geri. The situation has caused alarm among Veterinary Services and despair among producers, as Cyprus's dairy industry is taking a severe hit. The confirmation of cases in a large sheep and goat farm in Dali, owned by a livestock trader, and in a cattle farm in Geri, confirms the spread of the virus outside the initial zone. This leads to the creation of new protection and surveillance zones, with strict restrictions on the movement of animals and products. The Veterinary Services have activated European protocols and declared the affected areas in a state of emergency. Culling of animals is underway in the affected farms, and control and disinfection points have been set up in the Protection and Surveillance Zones. Official announcements from the Ministry of Agriculture are expected regarding additional measures to contain the epidemic, as the situation is considered very serious and requires immediate and effective action.
