FSF-MED President: No Flight Safety Issues from Athens FIR Blackout

The President of the Mediterranean Flight Safety Foundation (FSF-MED), Chrysanthos Chrysanthou, stated that the prolonged blackout on the radio frequencies of the Athens FIR did not cause any problems for flight safety. Cypriot authorities were able to manage all flights avoiding Greek airspace. According to Mr. Chrysanthou, the cause of the problem appears to be an equipment upgrade issue and not external interference. There is insufficient information about the exact cause, but the problem did not affect flight safety. During the blackout, the number of flights passing through Cypriot airspace increased as pilots preferred to avoid it. Cypriot authorities were informed in advance of the flights and were able to manage their data. Mr. Chrysanthou mentioned that no external interference has been confirmed, as such incidents usually target specific frequencies. He also emphasized the need to resolve issues between air traffic controllers and politicians, so as not to affect the smooth operation of the system. Cypriot services were fully prepared and effectively managed the situation.
