Gamers Becoming the Soldiers of the Future in Drone Warfare

The increasing use of drones in modern warfare, as seen in the war in Ukraine, has created a new category of soldiers: gamers. Young people, often without prior military experience, are leveraging their skills acquired through video games to operate First Person View (FPV) drones on the battlefield. Reaction speed, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to make decisions under pressure – skills cultivated in video games – are crucial for effective drone operation. For Ukraine, utilizing this 'digital generation' is a significant advantage in countering Russian superiority. Research has shown that gamers, especially those with experience in flight simulators, perform similarly to professional pilots on critical psychological indicators, such as stress management. Furthermore, gaming experience is linked to better spatial perception, attention focus, and psychomotor endurance. In Ukraine, drone training schools confirm that the best pilots come from the 18-27 age group and have a strong gaming background. Greece and Cyprus are being called upon to seriously consider the possibility of utilizing these skills to strengthen their forces.
