GBL Substance Detected in Samples from Larnaca Home

The substance "gamma-Butyrolactone" (GBL) was detected in samples taken from the home in Larnaca where a 78-year-old man died and four relatives are hospitalized. GBL is a common solvent used in industry as a cleaner or solvent, but in the human body it acts as a prodrug of GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid). Police are investigating the circumstances of the 78-year-old's death and the illness of his wife (72) and three other people (62, 77 and 81). According to the Police, the four people developed symptoms after consuming water from a water cooler in the 78-year-old's home. The condition of the hospitalized patients is stable and out of danger.
