GBL Substance Linked to Death and Hospitalizations in Cyprus

The State Chemistry of Cyprus has identified gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) as the cause of death of a 78-year-old and the hospitalization of four other individuals, following the consumption of water from a cooler in Larnaca. GBL is an industrial solvent not intended for human consumption, but it is rapidly metabolized into GHB, a potent central nervous system depressant. Even in small doses, GBL can cause severe effects, including confusion, loss of coordination, respiratory depression, coma, and addiction. Combining GBL with alcohol is particularly dangerous. The substance is controlled in Cyprus, and its trafficking or possession for consumption is illegal.
