Germany Proposes Joint NATO Mission in Greenland Amid US Acquisition Interest

Germany will propose the establishment of a joint NATO mission to monitor and protect security interests in the Arctic, in response to US threats of acquiring Greenland. The new mission, dubbed “Arctic Sentry,” could be modeled on “Baltic Sentry,” which protects critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. This move comes amid heightened tensions, as Donald Trump has expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, raising concerns among allies. The German Vice-Chancellor has called on the US to respect Greenland’s sovereignty and international law, emphasizing that security in the Arctic must be strengthened through cooperation, not confrontation. He will meet with US officials in Washington this week to discuss the matter.
