Germany Proposes Joint NATO Mission to Greenland Amid US Acquisition Interest

Germany is set to propose a joint NATO mission, dubbed “Arctic Sentry,” to monitor and protect security interests in the Arctic region, including Greenland. The move comes amid heightened tensions with the US, stemming from Donald Trump’s expressed desire to consider the possibility of acquiring Greenland. The mission would be modeled after “Baltic Sentry,” which aims to protect critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. Trump has repeatedly voiced interest in acquiring Greenland, citing national security concerns. The recent escalation of his interest, following a US operation in Venezuela, has raised concerns among allies regarding his willingness to use military means to achieve his political goals. German Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil has called on the United States to respect Greenland’s sovereignty and international law, emphasizing that the island’s future is exclusively a matter for Denmark and Greenland. He also underscored the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic through NATO cooperation, rather than mutual antagonism. Klingbeil will meet with US officials in Washington, along with other G7 finance ministers and representatives from other countries. Simultaneously, German Foreign Minister Johann Wansdorff is expected to meet with his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, after a visit to Iceland, to discuss enhancing security in the North Atlantic.
