Germany Will Not Get Involved in the Middle East, Chancellor Scholz Says

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has firmly stated that Germany will not become militarily involved in the Middle East, emphasizing that there is neither a plan nor an order for such involvement. He also mentioned that Washington did not consult with the German government before the developments, nor did it request European assistance. However, Merz reiterated that Germany shares the goal of preventing Iran from being a threat to the region and is willing to contribute to security after the war. The Chancellor expressed reservations about the war, highlighting the lack of a convincing idea for its termination. He underscored the importance of transatlantic relations but stressed that Germany will not hesitate to express differing opinions when their interests diverge. He considered that a genuine partnership must be able to withstand such disagreements. Merz warned of the dangers of a potential collapse of the Iranian state, which could have negative consequences for Germany's energy security and trigger a migration crisis. At the same time, he reiterated the need for Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions and support for terrorism. Finally, the Chancellor emphasized Iran's responsibility for the crisis in the Middle East and expressed hope that the Iranian people would be able to determine their own destiny. He left open the possibility of military security of the Strait of Hormuz after the war, while emphasizing the importance of a united Europe for the continent's security.
