Getting Worse Every Year?

Following last year's devastating fire in the mountainous region of Limassol, serious gaps were identified in the readiness of the Civil Defence. Specifically, there was no effective mechanism for informing and evacuating residents, a lack of coordination for closing roads and sending resources, and a shortage of water tankers to combat the fire. Despite recognizing these gaps, the Civil Defence has not taken steps to improve evacuation procedures, has not created a resident notification system, and has not purchased water tankers. The purchase of water tankers depends on the approval of the Ministry of Finance, while the availability of aerial means remains uncertain. The author expresses strong criticism for the lack of lessons learned from past mistakes and the inability to coordinate between services. It is pointed out that the lack of preparation endangers the safety of citizens and the effective response to potential future fires. This situation highlights the need for immediate and effective action by the Civil Defence, with the aim of strengthening preparedness and protecting citizens from the devastating consequences of fires.
