Greece Investigates Cause of Air Traffic Control Blackout

Greece experienced a serious technical issue with the communications of the Civil Aviation Authority, leading to the closure of the Greek FIR (Flight Information Region) and the grounding of aircraft. The problem was detected early Sunday morning and concerned the loss of communication between the control tower of 'Eleftherios Venizelos' airport and the antennas in Geraneia Mountains. The disruption of wireless communication between air traffic controllers and pilots endangered flight safety, making a temporary closure of the airspace necessary. The main question arising is why the backup systems did not function, leading to the grounding of aircraft. Initial indications suggest a hardware failure and not external intervention or cyberattack. EYP (National Intelligence Service) and the National Cyber Security Authority have been informed and are collecting information. The incident is under investigation to clarify the exact causes and take measures to prevent similar problems in the future.
