Greek Airports Grounded Due to Communication System Failure

A technical problem with the central radio communication systems of the Athens FIR has caused a complete disruption of flights to and from Greece, as well as delays and cancellations. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority has issued a NOTAM and is working to restore the problem, in coordination with external agencies and Eurocontrol. By midday, the restoration had allowed some departures and arrivals to resume, as well as part of the transit traffic. Thousands of passengers are stranded at various airports across the country, including Heraklion, Chania, and Ioannina. OTE announced that the initial check did not reveal any problems with its own circuits.
