Ground Matter: Melita Kouta's Solo Exhibition at korai project space

Visual artist Melita Kouta presents her solo exhibition "GroundMatter" at the korai project space. The exhibition explores the concept of the ground as a liminal space and carrier of meaning, combining memory and matter. Kouta uses clay, earthy materials, and natural elements from the Cypriot landscape, transforming them into ceramic forms reminiscent of fossils. At the heart of the exhibition is a reflection on the home, not only as an architectural object but also as an existential place. A sculptural model of a house, a replica of her grandparents' home in Nicosia, symbolizes habitation, memory, and presence. The deconstruction of the architectural elements creates a sense of unstable ground, inviting the viewer to explore the sculptural installations. The "GroundMatter" exhibition creates an atmosphere of place, experienced through the landscape, the body, and the shelter. Kouta explores the boundaries of coexistence between different forms of life, combining autobiographical references with material processes. Her sculptures function as uncanny states-objects, negotiating the boundary between the visible and the invisible. The exhibition presents a silent, meditative approach to memory and material persistence, placing the human experience within the slow rhythms of geological time. Melita Kouta is known for her work including sculpture, installations, and site-specific practices, focusing on the relationships between memory, material, and landscape.
