Cyprus Takes Over the EU Presidency – 'We Will Work to Give New Impetus to the European Project'

Cyprus assumes the presidency of the European Union for six months, starting today. The inauguration ceremony will take place on January 7th with an artistic performance entitled “MEMORY-PRESENT-FUTURE”, which will highlight the history and culture of Cyprus as an integral part of European culture. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus will work for an autonomous and strong European Union, capable of protecting its citizens and interests, building partnerships, and promoting peace, security, and prosperity. The presidency will focus on five pillars: Autonomy through Security, Defence and Preparedness, Autonomy through Competitiveness, an Open Union to the World, an Autonomous Union of Values, and a long-term budget for an Autonomous Union. The Deputy Minister for European Affairs described the assumption of the presidency as a leading political act and a moment of pride for Cyprus.
