The Republic of Cyprus assumes the presidency of the European Union for six months, starting today. The inauguration ceremony will take place on January 7th at the State Theatre of Contemporary Performing Arts (THOK) with a performance entitled “MEMORY-PRESENT-AFTER”, which will combine various art forms such as music, dance, theatre and digital technologies. The performance will tell the story of Cyprus and highlight its culture as part of European culture. Cyprus has held the EU Presidency only once before, in 2012, and taking office now marks a new phase for the country, as it has matured and gained greater influence on the European and international stage. The Christodoulides government aims to give new impetus to the European project, promoting European autonomy and integration. President Christodoulides stated that Cyprus will work for a Union that is strong from within, capable of protecting its citizens and interests, and building partnerships from a position of strength. He also emphasized the need for an outward-looking and open Union, with a substantial role in global affairs. The presidency will focus on five key pillars: Autonomy through Security, Defence and Preparedness, Autonomy through Competitiveness, a Union Open to the World, an Autonomous Union of Values for All, and a long-term budget for an Autonomous Union. The Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, described the assumption of the presidency as a top political act and a moment of pride for Cyprus.
