Haralambidis: Cardiovascular Diseases Remain the Leading Cause of Death in Cyprus

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Cyprus, but the percentage of deaths from them has decreased from 40% to 24% in recent years. This was stated by the Minister of Health, Neofytos Haralambidis, at a conference on cardiovascular health. The Minister emphasized that 87% of deaths from cardiovascular diseases concern people over 65 years of age, while the most common causes are myocardial infarction, atherosclerotic heart disease, heart failure and stroke. Mr. Haralambidis stressed the importance of prevention, stating that adopting a healthy lifestyle, such as quitting smoking, proper nutrition and regular exercise, can help prevent cardiovascular diseases. In addition, he referred to the new EU plan, “Safe Hearts Plan”, which aims to strengthen the prevention, early diagnosis and effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases, and assured that Cyprus will align its actions with the plan, investing in primary and secondary prevention, strengthening the health system and research.
