Health Minister Announces Meeting to Address Nursing Shortage

The Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, announced a meeting in one month to evaluate proposals regarding the shortage of nurses in Cyprus. The meeting will gather stakeholders with the aim of finding immediate and mutually acceptable solutions. The Minister pointed out that the nursing shortage is a global problem, but in Cyprus, measures have been taken that have led to an 85% increase in nursing students over the past three years, although incentives are not yet considered sufficient. Furthermore, Mr. Charalambides visited the Limassol Hospital, where he stated that his personal goal is to implement small-scale improvements in various departments of the hospital, such as Pediatrics, Orthopedics, and Radiology, by the first quarter of 2026. These interventions aim to create a more friendly and functional hospital environment. In addition, major upgrade and expansion projects of Limassol Hospital are underway, with a total cost exceeding 23 million euros. The projects include the upgrade of the Emergency Department, the creation of new Intensive Care Units, Hemodialysis Units, Infectious Diseases Units, and Day Care Units, as well as a second building for administrative services. The Minister of Health expressed confidence that with the completion of the projects, the hospital will be in a much better condition. However, he stressed the need to examine any additional needs due to population growth. The Ministry's goal is to implement the projects within the scheduled timelines.
