Published January 18, 2026, 06:18

Cyprus is taking over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the second time, confirming its role as an integral part of the EU. Taking on this position marks Cyprus's readiness to act as a bridge of cooperation between Europe and the Middle East. The first Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU coincided with the release of the second edition of the euro, where the map of Europe was expanded to include Cyprus. This change in the map symbolizes Cyprus's political and economic integration into Europe, despite its geographical location in the Middle East. The relationship between Cyprus and Europe is complex and shaped by historical experiences and different approaches. Since the 19th century, the European intellectual tradition has been a point of reference for Greek Cypriots, while for Turkish Cypriots, Europe was associated with modernization. Cyprus's path to Europe has not been smooth, as there have been periods of questioning and reservation. British rule, efforts for Union with Greece, and intercommunal conflicts shaped the Cyprus-Europe relationship. Joining the EU was a significant geopolitical move for Cyprus.
