How Much Chocolate Do Cypriots Eat and What Are Their Preferences?

Published January 6, 2026, 09:24

The price of chocolate has increased significantly in recent years due to adverse weather conditions and the El Niño phenomenon, which affected cocoa harvests in Ghana and Ivory Coast, which produce 60% of the world's cocoa. Despite the increases, Europe remains the largest producer and consumer of chocolate worldwide. In Cyprus, chocolate consumption is around 4 kilograms per person annually, lower than in other European countries such as Switzerland (11 kilograms) and Germany (9 kilograms). The increased price of cocoa has forced Cypriot chocolate companies to raise their prices while maintaining the quality of their products. Cypriot consumers prefer bon bons and chocolates with various fillings, as well as combinations of milk and dark chocolate. Chocolate consumption in Cyprus is seasonal, with an increase in winter and a decrease in summer, although in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumption even during the summer months.
