HRW Calls for End to State of Emergency in El Salvador
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is calling on the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, to end the state of emergency that has been in place in the country for four years. HRW reports that during this period, more than 91,000 people have been arrested without a judicial warrant, including children, resulting in serious human rights violations. The organization emphasizes the need for judicial oversight and fair trials. Bukele's policy, aimed at combating gangs, has been emulated by other governments in Latin America, despite criticism. Recently, the parliament of El Salvador approved the imposition of life imprisonment for minors who commit serious crimes.
