“Illegal and Hostile” Moves by the Republic of Cyprus Regarding Property, Claims Ustel

The representative of the Turkish Cypriot side, Mr. Ustel, condemned the actions of the Republic of Cyprus regarding new arrests related to Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories. He described these moves as illegal, hostile, and politically motivated, arguing that they violate international law, the Founding Treaties of 1960, and the European Convention on Human Rights. Mr. Ustel stated that the Republic of Cyprus is exerting pressure on the Turkish Cypriot community and sabotaging legal solutions, while referring to the recent decision of French courts to release an individual sought by the Republic of Cyprus, considering it proof of the weakness of the legal basis of the Greek Cypriot side. Furthermore, he accused the Republic of Cyprus of ignoring the Immovable Property Commission, which has been recognized as an effective remedy by the European Court of Human Rights. Mr. Ustel called on the Republic of Cyprus to show prudence and abandon policies that escalate tensions, emphasizing that a solution is only possible with respect for sovereign equality and the will of both sides.
