Indefinite Suspension Imposed on Tychikos by Holy Synod

The Holy Synod of Cyprus convened in an emergency session and decided to impose an indefinite suspension on the former Metropolitan of Paphos, Tychikos, due to his appeal to political courts. The Synod considers the appeal an act of disobedience. Simultaneously, the amendment of the Statutory Charter of the Church of Cyprus was discussed, with a proposal from the Archbishop for the election of Bishops by the Synod itself, without the participation of the faithful, except for the election of the Archbishop. The session also concerned allegations regarding the monks residing in the Avvakoum Monastery. Tychikos did not participate in the process citing health reasons and is reportedly considering an appeal to European courts.
